Bio a historie

The Crooked Beats, those first-class purveyors of fine beat'n'roll, were founded in the summer of 2006 when Adrian Abrahamson, by chance, saw guitarist/vocalist Petr Janak performing with his group, The Jokers, at a local festival. Quite impressed, the former duly introduced himself to the latter after the performance and having complimented the latter on his playing (as well as his fine taste in t-shirts), the two discovered through the ensuing conversation that they had quite similar tastes in music and decided that they should get together for a fun R'n'R session. The session was such a blast that it resulted in the formation of the Crooked Beats, featuring two of Janak's bandmates from his previous group, drummer Jakub Larisch and Jakub's brother, Ondra, on the bass-guitar. After a period of intense practice and rehearsing, the group played their much-anticipated debut show in November of that year. The word was out and had spread fast-a new and very individual group from Frydek-Mistek was now on the music scene with its own exciting sound!

In addition to frequent gigging, the now well-honed Crooked Beats recorded a 4-song demo of originals in August 2007. Filter Magazine, a national music magazine, liked it so much that they added '(There's No) Rock 'n' Roll On The Radio' to their top-20 chart as well as including it on its CD sampler in the March 2008 issue, which featured a spread on the group.

In Spring 2008, the group's debut album, Life In The Consumer Society, was recorded and released that July on the Cecek Records label to quite favorable reviews. Throughout the summer, the Crooked Beats played at domestic festivals before embarking on a club-tour of the U.S.A., playing some memorably fun and lively shows. The group then returned back to the Czech Republic and continued to play as headlining act as well as support to established visiting groups.

That autumn, drummer Jakub Larisch decided to stop playing music altogether and to focus on a career outside of music, which resulted in his amicable departure from the Crooked Beats. The group then set about finding a suitable replacement. Unfortunately, after having gone through several drummers in the hopes of continuing in the direction they had been going in, the situation would prove to be an obstacle for the group though, despite this, they managed to carry on. However, the group would soon suffer yet another loss when, in late 2009, when Janak accepted a career-opportunity that would see him relocating to Prague, thus starting a new chapter in his life.

And so, in January 2010, with the two remaining members of the Crooked Beats leaving the group, Abrahamson found himself as the sole-remaining member of the group. Determined to keep the name alive as well as continuing to make new music, he recruited several musicians but ultimately, due to lack of real commitment on their part, would not succeed in sustaining the group very long. Nevertheless, well-needed time was taken for reassessment which led to the logical decision to focus attention and energies on songwriting. Over the next several years, demos of songs were recorded at a small, local studio in Frydek-Mistek at a relaxed and leisurable pace.

Eventually, after a renewed and especially fruitful period of songwriting specifically with a new album in mind, the time had come once again to enter to the studio to commence with its recording. Recording sessions for the new album, which would eventually be titled 'Hot Pie, Black Cherry Wine & 12 Other Delights', diligently began in April 2017 at GM Studio in Jablunkov, CZ which was where the debut album, 'Life in the Consumer Society', had been recorded and produced as well. The smooth and steady recording would spread out over the following two and a half years with Abrahamson in the producer's helm alongside engineer, Martin Rozenek. Special-guest musicians were invited to various sessions including former-bandmate Petr Janak, making it a long-overdue reunion for the two.

Which brings us up to the present: a new album has arrived, a natural progression with fourteen piping-hot selections that has a little something for everyone in the name of F-U-N. We rate it highly and think it was well worth the wait. We also think you will, too. 'Hot Pie, Black Cherry Wine & 12 Other Delights' is the name of the new platter and it is now being served, so bring your appetite and get your well-deserved dessert while you're at it.

Dig in.and let the music take you to very good places indeed..
